Heffley

Heffley Creek is a neighbourhood in Kamloops located along the Yellowhead Highway. The community contains a general store, community hall and elementary school. Along with the Rayleigh neighborhood, it is physically separated from the rest of Kamloops by the Thompson River and by the Kamloops Indian Reserve. While it feels separated from the rest of Kamloops, the community is only 20 minutes from downtown Kamloops. The Sun Peaks municipality and ski resort is located 30 min from the Heffley exit. 

SCHOOLS

Heffley has an elementary school located right within the community that services the primary students, students in Grade 7-9 attend Brock Middle School, while the older high school students  attend Norkam Secondary School located in North Kamloops.

HISTORY

Originally named Bourdignon Creek in the early 1800’s, it was given its name during the fur trade era The first two settlers of the region, business partners – Robert Todd and Samuel Bigham took adjoining 160 acre lots.  During this period the east side of the North Thompson River was one of the routes of the fur brigades on their way to the North.

Heffley Creek later took its name from Adam Heffley who entered B.C. as a miner and packer during the gold rush of 1858. He settled at Bourdignon Creek in 1865 and took over Todd’s and Bigham’s land at the end of 1869. Heffley raised horses on his ranch and continued to work in the area.
